Tips for Paper 1 HL

  1. In the introduction, identify clearly the two pieces you are comparing, by name and author if possible.  Identify the text type and context and state in a single sentence the most important similarity (usually theme)
  2. Never ever say that something is not present
  3. Make sure you use the proper terms for identifying stylistic devices and forms.
  4. Use 25ct words where possible.
  5. Organize and make smooth transitions
  6. Write a conclusion, not a summary. There is a difference between a summary and a conclusion. A summary simply reiterates the points you made in your essay and is generally considered a boring and ineffective way to end a paper. A conclusion wraps up your essay in a clear and interesting way. While there may be some reiteration of previous points, it does not simply list or repeat what you’ve already written.

The hole in the bagel

The perfect weekend breakfast -- as it's called in Brooklyn, a bagel with shmeer and lox. And lots of it, together with some tomato, cucumber and purple onion.  But the best part is always the hole in the middle.  It's what allows you to appreciate and enjoy the rest.
